Commissioned by HARRY AND VIRGINIA ROBINSON IN 1906, Virginia’s father, architect Nathaniel Dryden, designed the 6,000 square foot residence for the young couple.
The home was one of the first built in Beverly Hills and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its split-level design has been called Beaux-Art style and with just five main rooms, it is by today’s standards, rather modest for Beverly Hills.
Entering the house, you immediately view, through the French doors, the gracious central Mall area of the gardens. The ENTRANCE is central to the house and provides a feeling of grandeur and elegance which is echoed throughout the home. The ENTRANCE is the setting for two pieces of note, a massive ornately carved desk and a beautiful grandfather clock.
The PARLOR-SITTING ROOM, like the other rooms, is furnished today as it was when VIRGINIA ROBINSON died in 1977. French furniture dominates and the room has impressive pieces including a grand piano and a magnificent chandelier.
The DINING ROOM is a bright and sophisticated room and has a silver fireplace which is unique and gracious. The table, set for lunch, awaits the countless guests that have enjoyed the hospitality of this great estate.
The MORNING ROOM with its mirror panels has charm and its Boulle table and soft furnishings give a feeling of tranquility. The LIBRARY offers solitude and a view of the gardens which also supply the beautiful bouquets of flowers that grace the tables throughout the home.
MRS. ROBINSON’S BEDROOM, recently restored, is compact and elegant. A room that shows her personality and taste in the elegant simplicity that she chose for her surroundings.
The KITCHEN and UTILITY AREA finish the tour of this obviously loved home. Undeniably unique, the house and gardens offer a glimpse back to the luxurious lifestyle of a bye-gone era in Beverly Hills history.
The VIRGINIA ROBINSON GARDENS AND HOME may be viewed by appointment only. The house is the only privately owned home available for public viewing in Beverly Hills. For appointment call (310) 276-5367 Ext. 100
