THE VIRGINIA ROBINSON GARDENS

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

We invite you to become a Virginia Robinson Gardens volunteer.  The estate of Mrs. Virginia Robinson is a beautiful remnant of an elegant earlier Beverly Hills lifestyle.  Administered as part of the Los Angeles County Arboretum System, the Virginia Robinson Gardens encompasses Mrs. Robinson’s home and its furnishings, a grand pool pavilion, tennis court, and the gardens terraced over 6.2 acres.

The central lawn bordered by a formal cypress colonnade was the site of many parties in Mrs. Robinson’s day.  The Italian garden with its sunny southwest exposure features pools, fountains and several pieces of classic garden sculpture.  The cool eastern and northern sides of the property contain the largest collection of King Palms outside their native Australia.  The rose garden boasts nearly two hundred rose bushes blooming in Mrs. Robinson’s favorite shades of pink.  Paths throughout the gardens lead to outdoor rooms, places to sit and listen to the quiet.

Today,  the gardens demonstrate that “the environment” is where we all live and that nature is with us every day, even in our most urban settings.  The gardens have many lessons to teach all of us.

The Robinson Gardens are open Tuesday thru Friday, by appointment only for tours of the house and gardens.  For reservations please call (310) 276-5367.

Volunteer opportunities:

The tours are conducted by our team of docents.  During the docent training, you will learn the history of the estate, as well as how to conduct a group through the wonderful experience of exploring Mrs. Robinson’s world.  Special training is offered for children’s docents.

Get your hands dirty in the Gardens.  There are always pruning, digging, transplanting and clean up jobs to be done.  Learn about planting a herb garden, pronouncing Latin plant names.

Garden volunteers also enjoy special “Thank you” events such as trips to other Gardens.

Volunteering at the Virginia Robinson Gardens is a great way to meet new people, a great way to learn new skills, and a great way to enjoy the Gardens.  For information on becoming a volunteer, please call (310) 276-5367 Ext. 100.
